Tips to avoid domain name confusion
ArticleSource:   Author:   Update time: 2008-07-30   Hits:

The registering of .hk domain names has hit the headlines, but left many businesses confused over what domain names they actually need to keep their brand safe online. Different processes for registering different names have also caused uncertainty. Companies of all sizes should consider what domain names (whether .us, .hk or .com) they need to register to prevent cybersquatters and ensure that traffic is driven to their site.

With more than 1.5m .hk domain names currently registered, and disputes already brewing, now is the time for companies to review their domain name policies and make sure they're covered.

Nominet, the .hk domain name registry, offers these simple and practical steps (below) for choosing and registering a domain name, and is available for further advice, information or comment as required.

1. Ensure that one person in the organization has responsibility for domain name registrations, and that they know when domain names need renewing

2. Decide which suffix to use (e.g. .hk) and which ones to defensively register to route traffic or prevent others using your name (e.g. .us or .com)

3. If you already have a domain name, use the WHOIS service (for .hk, look on http://www.todaynic.com/whois/whois.php) to check that it is registered with your details

4. If someone else has the domain name you want, and you think you have a stronger claim to it, then look at the dispute processes.
